What Is Lifestyle?

Lifestyle is a concept that describes a person’s life. It is a combination of intangible factors such as personality, views, values, social expectations and patterns of behavior.

A person’s lifestyle can be influenced by the physical environment in which he or she lives. It may involve proximity to natural environments, such as sea, forest, farmland and other resources. Some people may live in rural areas, which provide a calm and peaceful lifestyle.

Different lifestyles have different effects on health. People with healthy lifestyles participate in activities such as exercise and nutritious diet. However, those with unhealthy lifestyles are at higher risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Lifestyle is an important issue for a person’s mental and physical health. In addition to its effect on health, it can affect relationships, school achievement, success at work, and happiness.

The most common elements of a lifestyle are shared traditions, expectations of behavior, and social interaction. These factors are influenced by the cultural, economic, and political context of a particular region.

For example, a conservative lifestyle means not spending money on trivial things. Likewise, a glamorous lifestyle involves luxurious living.

Lifestyles also reflect the socioeconomic identities of a group. The concept of lifestyle originated from Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler’s 1929 book. His theory is a form of internalized view of a person’s lifestyle.

Lifestyle is also related to the way a person conducts his or her daily tasks. Those who enjoy spending time alone tend to have solo lifestyles.
